The candidate maneuvers may involve not only changes of heading and speed, but also of altitude. The goal is to determine among all the conflict-free maneuvers the one that minimizes a certain energy cost function. A priority mechanism is incorporated into the energy function so that optimal resolution maneuvers are such that aircraft with lower priorities assume more responsibility in resolving the conflicts. Moreover, vertical maneuvers are penalized with respect to horizontal ones for the sake of passenger comfort. A geometric construction and a numerical algorithm for computing the optimal resolution maneuvers are given in the two aircraft case. As for the multi-aircraft case, an approximation scheme is proposed to compute a suboptimal two-legged solution. Extensive simulation results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Optimal Coordinated Maneuvers for Three Dimensional Aircraft

In this paper, we study the problem of designing optimal coordinated maneuvers for multiple aircraft conflict resolution. We propose an energy function to select among all the conflict-free maneuvers the optimal one. The introduced cost function incorporates a priority mechanism that favors those maneuvers where aircraft with lower priority assume more responsibility in resolving the predicted ...

Optimal Maneuver for Multiple Aircraft Conflict Resolution : a Braid Point of View ^

In this paper, we study conflict resolution for multiple aircraft encounter situations on a plane. First, the homotopy types of resolution maneuvers for n aircraft encounters are classified according to their images in the joint spacetime coordinates, which are shown to bear a one-to-one correspondence with the well-known pure braid group PB,. Energy is then proposed as the cost function for ch...

Formal Verification of an Optimal Air Traffic Conflict Resolution and Recovery Algorithm

Highly accurate positioning systems and new broadcasting technology have enabled air traffic management concepts where the responsibility for aircraft separation resides on pilots rather than on air traffic controllers. The Formal Methods Group at the National Institute of Aerospace and NASA Langley Research Center has proposed and formally verified an algorithm, called KB3D, for distributed th...

Conflict Resolution for Air Traffic Management: A Study in Multiagent Hybrid Systems

Air Traffic Management (ATM) of the future allows for the possibility of free flight, in which aircraft choose their own optimal routes, altitudes, and velocities. The safe resolution of trajectory conflicts between aircraft is necessary to the success of such a distributed control system. In this paper, we present a method to synthesize provably safe conflict resolution maneuvers. The method m...

Solving the Air Conflict Resolution Problem Under Uncertainty Using an Iterative Biobjective Mixed Integer Programming Approach

In this paper, we tackle the aircraft conflict resolution problem under uncertainties. We consider errors due to the wind effect, the imprecision on the aircraft speed prediction, and the delay in the execution of maneuvers. Using a geometrical approach, we derive an analytical expression for the minimum distance between aircraft, along with the corresponding probability of conflict. These expr...
